Instruments Flashcards

1
Q

What is IAS? Measured by which instrument? How?

A

Indicated Air Speed.
Measured by Air Speed Indicator.
Takes the dynamic pressure from the pitot tube and subtracts it from the static pressure from the static vent.

Q

What is CAS?

A

Calibrated Air Speed. IAS calibrated for instrument and position error.

(I googled this once; “instrument error” is due to the fact that the pressure envelope is different across the plane’s leading edges, especially across the pitot tube versus elsewhere on the plane.)

Q

(Plane’s changes in orientation) What are the two attitudes? What is “attitude” with respect to? What are their respective movements?

A

Bank, Nose up/down.

Attitude is with respect to the horizon.
Bank -> Roll;
Nose up/down -> pitch.
