Instrumentation Flashcards
3 types of finish
- mirror
- satin (matte)
- ebonized
significance of gold handled instruments
- tungsten carbide inserts much stronger than stainless steel
- prolongs instrument life
parts of surgical instrument
-ring -shank -joint -jaw -ratchet
why should instruments be soaked with sterile water during surgery?
-remove blood and debris -preserves function & finish
why should suction tips be flushed with syringe and sterile water?
-remove blood and debris
why should Saline never be used to soak rinse or wipe instruments?
-excessive exposure leads to corrosion/pitting
SOP delicate and micro-surgical instruments post procedure?
separated and placed into container in order to prevent damage
SOP excessively soaked instruments post procedure
soaked in water to aid terminal cleaning process
CLAMPING/OCCLUDING INSTRUMENTS
-compress tubular structures partially or completely obstructing flow of fluids -commonly ratcheted ex. hemostats, mosquito, satinsky, clamps, doyen, intestinal forceps
CUTTING/DISSECTING INSTRUMENTS
-incise, dissect, excise variety of tissues ex. scalpels, scissors, osteotomes, curettes, biopsy forceps, periosteal elevators
GRASPING/HOLDING INSTRUMENTS
-grip, manipulate, stabilize body tissue ex. debakey, adson and ferris-smith foreceps, babcock ochsner foreps
RETRACING/EXPOSING
-hold back/pull aside wound edges, organs, tissues, in order to gain access to operative site ex. retractors: richardson, ragnell, murphy balfour, weitlander, omni
SUCTIONING/ASPIRATING
-remove blood fluid debris from operating site ex. yankauer, poole, frazier suction
SUTURING/STAPLING
-litigate, repair, approximate tissues ex. all needle holders, suture carriers, knot pushers, endoloops, skin staplers, ligating clips and surgical staplers
ACCESSORY INSTRUMENTS
any instrument that doesn’t fall into category, but performs essential function as part of surgical intervention is an ACCESSORY
