- 1761 - appointed vice-kapellmeister by Prince Paul Anton of the Esterhazy family
- 1766 - the old kappelmeister died, so Haydn became full kapellmesiter
- Served the family for ~3 decades - improved the quality of the ensemble by appointing new instrumentalists
- The family supported Haydn’s plans and appreciated his contributions
- Composed operas, symphonies, string quartets
- 1790 - Prince Nikolaus died, succeeded by his son Anton, who was no longer interested in music so dismissed musicians - gave Haydn time to pursue personal projects
