Instrument Flying Flashcards
What is the ‘six pack’?
Altimeter
ASI
Turn Coordinator
VSI
Attitude Indicator
Heading Indicator
What are the two ‘control’ instruments?
Attitude + Power = Performance
Attitude Indicator (attitude)
Tachometer (power)
What are the performance instruments?
Everything other than the attitude indicator and tachometer, which we use for the attitude + power = performance formula.
We then use all the other performance instruments to make sure the AC is performing as we intend
What three instruments are pitch instruments?
- Attitude Indicator
- Altimeter
- VSI
What three instruments are bank instruments?
- Attitude Indicator
- Turn Coordinator
- Heading Indicator
What two instruments are power instruments?
- Tachometer
- ASI
What are the two most common instruments to fail?
Attitude and Heading indicator, powered by the vacuum system (the most commonly failed system). Turn Coordinatore becomes your new attitude indicator.
What are the causes of unusual attitudes?
- Improper scanning/interpolations
- Inattentiveness
- Disorientation/vertigo
- Turbulence
- Neglecting cockpit duties
- Getting confused
Prevent these by:
- Use proper scanning techniques
- Know your limits and be alert
- Be aware of instrument limitations
How do you recover from a nose up unusual attitude?
1) Full power
2) Nose down until ASI stops decreasing
3) Level wings
4) Reduce power to cruise
5) Cross check instruments
**1 and 2 can be done simultaneously
How do you recover from a spiral dive?
1) Power idle
2) Level wings
3) Nose up till ASI stops increasing
4) Return to cruise power
5) Crosscheck instruments
In an unusual nose up attitude, what two instruments should you use to recover?
ASI and Turn Coordinator (attitude indicator could have toppled so dont even think about looking at it or you’ll probably die)
