Institutionalisatin Flashcards
Situation - deprivation model
Inmates experience deprivation of freedom and safety
Causes stress and leaves only one way to cope which is through aggression.
Other characteristics is overcrowding noise
Dispositional - importation
Inmates import pre-existing values attitude including aggreive ones into the prison
Evaluation of the deprivation model
Strength - situational factors such as overcrowding significantly influence the amount of aggression both including inmate on inmate assults - suggests that the only way to deal with stress is through aggression
Limitation- harere and steffenmier
Collected data from us prisons including importation and deprivation variables
Found that only importation variables were significant predictors of violence
Evaluation of the importation model
Strength- delsi
Studied 831 juvi offenders who brought negative dispositional features into the prison
Inmates commuted more acts of violence compared to the control group
Supports the idea that behaviour stems from the individual
Limitation - delsi
Found that prisoners who were in gangs were more likely to be aggressive - however this could be explained by the fact that street gangs tend to be isolated from general inmate population therefore increasing violence
