Institutional racism 10 marker Flashcards
Definition
Institutional racism has been defined as the collective failure of an organisation to provide an appropriate and professional service to people because of their colour, culture of ethnic origin.
MacPherson
MacPherson accused the police of institutional racism during the inquiry into the murder of Stephen Lawrence.
MacPherson example
For example, the police failed to make early arrests leading to a lack of evidence which meant that the case collapsed twice.
Further evidence
Further evidence of institutional racism within the police force is in relation to police stop and searches.
Further evidence example
For example, the Equality and Human Rights Commission shows that police forces in the West Midlands are up to 28 times more likely to use stop and search powers against black people than white people.
