Definition
Deviance refers to behaviour which goes against the normal expected behaviour within society
Punished
Deviant behaviour will be punished with informal sanctions.
Time
Deviance is a socially constructed term and behaviour once defined as deviant may change over a period of time.
Cultures
what is viewed as deviant can also vary between cultures.
Lemert
Lemert distinguishes between primary and secondary deviance. Primary deviance refers to insignificant deviant acts that have not been publicly labelled. Primary deviants do not see themselves as deviant and neither do society.
Hughes
In comparison secondary deviance is the result of societal reaction. Hughes observed that the criminal label can become a master status. This means that society interprets all the labelled person’s actions in the context of their initial criminality.
