Act 1 - in the opening…

“A nice little promising life there, I thought, and a nasty mess somebody’s made of it” mouthpiece for Priestley saying they don’t deserve it and they can be more but it is taken away from them.
“(Harshly) yes, but you can’t. It’s too late. She’s dead.” Presents him as blunt and showing the what needs to be done and the consequences so far.

Act 2 - as the play progresses…

“You think young women ought to be protected against unpleasant and disturbing things?” Sarcastic tone, condemns the behaviour of upper class and the treatment of the working class. “(Massively) public men, mr billing, have responsibilities as well as privileges.” Mouthpiece for Priestley that it is the upper classes job to close the gap as they have the power. “(As Birling tries to protest turns in him) don’t stammer and hammer at me again, man” adresses him with no respect as if he sees his money as nothing in this scenario. No upper hands. Represents what Priestley wants

Act 3 - at the close…

“One Eva smith has gone but there are millions and millions and millions of Eva smiths and John smiths still left with us” not an anomaly, this is one example to help the rest. “We don’t live alone. We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other.” Social responsibility Priestley believes the upper class has to take. “Time will soon come when, if men will not learn that lesson, then they will be taught it in fire and blood and anguish” shows consequences which the audience would have experienced (world war) because of irony dramatic. Also shows the consequences to the upper class If they don’t change and shows how they have not thus far
