“Why shouldn’t they try for higher wages”

A

Shows Eric going against his father and sticking up for the lower class erlier on in the play.

Showing his potential to change and become a socialist from the beginning and quote foreshadows the fact that Eric becomes a socialist at the end of the play,

From this quote the audience may feel more respect for Eric as at this point he is the only member of the family to even attempt to stick up for the lower class. This quote in particular was very similar to Priestley’s views, so is seen as an “echo” of his voice and morals.

Adjective “pretty” shows how he was focused on physical appearance showing his shallow values. The noun “sport” dehumanises Eva and reflects that he views romance and sex as a game.

A

Eric got had an affair with Eva Smith and got her pregnant. Also stole from his father.

Eric shows change in the play. Stands up to his father

Him and his sister Sheila both learn a lesson from the inspector and accept their responsibility. They both judge their parents ignorants.
