Inspector Calls Flashcards
Mr Birling: heavy-looking,
rather portentous man in this middle fifties with fairly easy
manners but rather provincial in this speech.
This tells us that Mr Birling is quite an intimidating man, largely built and has an accent. The fact that he’s described as portentous tells us how much he likes to impress people.
Mrs Birling: His wife is about
fifty, a rather cold woman and her husband’s social superior.
This tells us that Mrs Birling is a conservative minded woman, who lacks emotion and is born in a higher class than her husband.
Sheila: is a pretty girl in her early twenties, very pleased with
life and rather excited.
Tells us that she has her life already prepared for her, could suggest that she is spoit, or is marrying a rich person.
Eric: in his early twenties, not quite at ease, half shy, half assertive
His age tells us how he has potential to change, he is undecisive, yet quite intelligent and also omniscient
Edna: Edna, the parlourmaid, is just clearing the table.
Represents the working-class, clears the mess of the upper class
Pink and intimate
Darker and brighter
Fairly large surburban house
Not cozy and homelike
Gerald Croft :is an attractive chap
about thirty, rather too manly to be a dandy but very much
the well-bred young man-about-town.
