Inspector Calls Flashcards
Way of writing about patriarchal society
Throughout Priestly’s political diatribe ‘An Inspector Calls’, the gender inequality enforced by Edwardian patriarchal society is portrayed ro be both damaging and unjust
A link that can be made between the start and end with the doorbell and phone gringing
Priestly cleverly uses cyclical structure with the ringing of doorbell and the telephone ‘sharply’ at both the beginning and end of the play. Both instances signpost the imminent arrival of a police inspector and perhaps the conflict between the capitalist Birling family and socialist inspectors. The adverb ‘sharply’ used in the stage directions also instils a dramatic and abrupt shift from the Birling family, to the arriving guest who is there to hold them accountable for their actions
