Inspection of the Expelled and Drained Matter (Excreta) Flashcards
General excreta observations to keep in mind:
White or pale, thinner=
yellow or dark, thicker=
White or pale, thinner= cold syndrome or deficiency syndrome
Yellow or dark, thicker= heat syndrome or excess syndrome
Sputum
turbid, thick mucus expelled from the respiratory tract and is therefore a manifestation of phlegm retained in the lungs.
Sputum:
White and watery
phlegm cold (usually yang def of the spleen or kidneys)
Sputum: white and sticky
damp phlegm in the lungs ( external damp invasion or spleen dysfunction leading to damp accumulation)
Sputum: yellow and sticky
phlegm heat in the lungs
Sputum: yellow sticky and thick
toxic heat in the lungs
Sputum: bloody tinged
phlegm with extreme heat in the lungs (if scanty it may be due to Lung yin deficiency)
Sputum: foul smelling with pus and blood
pulmonary abscess: excessive pathogenic heat
Nasal discharge
can indicate phlegm or dampness
Nasal discharge: clear and watery
wind cold invasion or cold pattern (if it becomes chronic it is due to Lung Qi def and wei qi def )
Nasal discharge: white and watery
phlegm cold or lung impairment
Nasal Discharge: sticky and yellow
damp heat, phlegm heat or lung impairment
Nasal discharge: white and sticky
wind heat invasion or damp accumulation
Nasal discharge: blood streaked
phlegm heat or damp heat
Saliva: clear and thin saliva
normal spleen and stomach function
Saliva: excessive clear or white and thin
cold in the spleen
Saliva: sticky and thick, possibly yellowish
heat in the spleen
Saliva: excessive saliva
spleen qi or spleen yang deficiency (not burning up extra fluid)
Saliva: coming out of mouth with facial paralysis and hemiplegia
wind
Lack of Saliva
SP Qi Deficiency
Vomit
Rebellious Stomach Qi
Vomit: thin, without any foul smell
cold syndrome (spleen and stomach yang def or invasion of stomach pathogenic cold)
Vomit:turbid and foul smelling
heat syndrome ( heat in spleen and stomach or liver fire invading the stomach)
Vomit: vomit with undigested food
food retention in the stomach due to excessive eating and drinking or from dysfunction of spleen and stomach
