Difference between Dry Rot and Wet Rot

A

Both are forms of fungal decay.

Dry Rot:

  • Can spread throughout building.
  • Deep cracks across grain with evidence of white sheets (Mycelium growth).
  • Lemon colour in light.
  • Timber will be brown and will crumble.
  • Fruiting bodies - disperse spores.
  • More serious

Wet Rot:

  • Usually localised.
  • Spongy feel to wood.
  • Black fungus.
  • Usually damages paintwork.
  • Advanced state, wood is dry and crumbly.
