Inside a Cell Flashcards
cell membrane
a thin envelope that regulates the entry and exit of various molecules found in the cell; the skin of the cell
cytoplasm
the liquid phase of a cell that contains various organelles such as the nucleus, mitochondria and centrioles
nucleus
center of the cell containing the “blueprints” of the cell
chromatin
loosely coiled strands of DNA contained in the nucleus of cells that are not divided; suspended in the liquid phase of the nucleus
nucleoplasm
the liquid phase of the nucleus
nucleoli
one to four dark regions contained in the nucleus; Protein Synthesis
nuclear membrane
the double layered membrane enclosing the nucleus of a cell; includes numerous pores that permit the movement of molecules between the nucleoplasm and the cytoplasm
rough endoplasmic reticulum
organelle in the cytoplasm of a cell in which ribosomes are present and protein synthesis takes place
ribosomes
rough surface projections attached to rough ERs
smooth endoplasmic reticulum
structure identical to the rough ER without the presence of ribosomes; lipid and steroid synthesis
Golgi apparatus
packages the protein release from the rough ER
cytoplasmic secretory vesicles
formed by the Golgi apparatus; use for cellular use or export
mitochondria
double-layered spherical structures that are the “powerhouse” of the cell because they release energy used to synthesize ATP molecules
polyribosome
groups of ribosomes that are similar in structure and function to the ribosomes associated with the rough ER; float freely in the cytoplasm
centrioles
present in cells capable of duplication; consist of tubules arranged at right angles to one another
