Cell Types Flashcards
simple squamous epithelium cells
flattened cells in a single row
simple cuboidal epithelium
cells shaped like small cubes (sides aprx of equal length) and are lines up adjacent to one another
simple columnar epithelium
cells that look like tall columns with sides much longer than the base, in a neat row with no space between
simple epithelium
single row of cells that have the same shape
stratified epithelium
two or more rows of cells stacked upon one another with the deepest layer of cells resting on a basement membrane and more superficial cells extending toward the surface
pseudostratified
the base of each cell rests on the basement membrane, yet the cells are various heights so they do not all reach the surface
cilia
micro hairs found which perform essential functions in particular regions
smooth muscle cells
includes a single nucleus and appear as elongated spindles with a smooth, glossy cytoplasm
striated muscle cells
cells which contain several nuclei in each cell and are distinctive because the cytoplasm includes striations (stripes created by actin and myosin); found in skeletal and cardiac muscle tissues
nerve cells (neurons)
may be quite large and complex, containing numerous cell processes that extend in a variety of directions
bone cells (osteocytes)
small spider-like cells that are typically arranged in a circular array around collections of blood vessels and nerves
oocytes
large, egg-shaped cells containing chromosomal material within a prominent nucleus; produces by women
