Q

Describe the tarsomeres on an insect leg

A

Pseudosegments on tarsus - not real segments as there is only one tarsal muscle.
Five of fewer.
Underside may have ventral pads (pulvilli or euplantulae) which assists in adhesion to surfaces. Can be setose (hairy) or smooth.

Q

Describe the pretarsus on an insect leg

A

Bears small pair of lateral claws (ungues) and usually a median lobe (arolium).
In Diptera there may be a central spine like or pad like empodium and a pair of lateral pulvilli. These structures allow flies to walk on walls and ceilings.

Q

Holometabolous vs hemimetabolous development

A

Hemi:
Incomplete metamorphosis - do not have pupa
Juveniles = nymphs
Resemble adults without wings and genetalia
Nymphs often coexist with adult in similar environment and eat same food

Holo:
Complete metamorphosis - have pupal stage
Juveniles = larvae
Look different from final adult in every instar
Different lifestyle and diet from adult - competition between larvae and adult rare
