Insect ventilation Flashcards
what is stage one of ventilation in insects?
air diffuses through spiracles
what is stage two of ventilation in insects?
air diffuses through tracheae
what is stage three of ventilation in insects?
air diffuses down trachioles
what is stage four of ventilation in insects?
gases dissolve in fluid
what is stage five of ventilation in insects?
O2 diffuses into cells and CO2 diffuses out of cells
what is special about active tissues?
they have less fluid, so there is more surface area for exchange
what do some insects do to increase air flow?
they move their wings or abdomen or thorax
What is in tracheoles?
Tracheal fluid
When does water from the tracheal fluid move out?
When lactic acid builds up, water moves out by osmosis, increasing the surface area for exchange of gases
