Insect Morphology Flashcards
What is hypognathous?
The head is vertical and the mouth is facing downwards
What is prognathous?
The head is horizontal, mouthparts are anterior (in front)
What is opisthognathous?
The head is vertical, mouthparts are posterior (face to the back of the insect)
Name the segments of the leg in order starting from the body
Coax, trocanter, femur, tibia, tarsus, claw
What is the function of sensillae?
They measure pressure, stress, smell and are used to taste substrates
Why are legs covered in sensilla?
To plan the next motor activity
What order does wing venation go in?
Costa, sub-costa, radius, media, cubitus and anal
What are the pigmented spots on the wings called?

Give the positions of the aorta, gut and nerve cord
Aorta is dorsal, gut is central and nerve cord is ventral
What is the Antennapedia gene?
It is a hox gene that specifies transcription factors for the anterior/posterior pattern
Where are the highest levels of the Antennapedia gene?
In the central portion of the 2nd thoracic segment where an adult leg is produced
What are the four segments of the brain?
Archicerebrum
Prosocerebrum/Protocerebrum
Deutocerebrum
Tritocerebrum
