Inorganic Nomenclature Flashcards
What are the organic compounds?
They’re the ones that are combined with carbon
Can a non-metal produce electricity?
No
Non-metal + non-metal =
Covalent bond
Metal + non-metal =
Ionic Bond
What is a bond?
It’s the link between two or more atoms
What are some properties of ionic bonds?
- Weak
- Steal electrons
- Non-metal + metal
What are some properties of covalent bonds?
- Strong
- Share electrons
- Non-metal + non-metal
What can a metallic bond do?
It can produce electricity
How can an atom become an ion?
By gaining or losing electrons
Properties of ions
- They can receive or give electrons
What is a cation?
It’s the ions tha lose electrons and take a positive charge.
What is an anion?
The ones that receive electrons and become negative.
What are monatomic ions?
THey’re the ones formed by single atoms
How do you write a cation?
Name of element + ion –> element ion
How do you write a anion?
Name of element + “ide” suffix –> elementide
How do you write an ionic compound?
The name of the cation is written first and its followed by the anion.
Element ion + elementide
What happens when alkali metals and alkanline earth metals combine with non-metals?
They form CATIONS
What do halogens, oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen form?
They form ANIONS
What do transition metals form?
They form CATIONS, and can have a charge of two or three.
How do you write the name of transition metals?
Metal ion + Roman numbers (to identify the ion’s charge) –> Element (n)
What type of compound are Acids?
IONIC COMPOUNDS
What happens when acids ionize?
The hydrogen has cations, and would bond to an ANION.
What are acids made of?
They´re made of one or more hydrogen cations bounded to an anion.
How can we determine the presence and amount of oxygen in an acid?
With the suffix and preffix.
