Inorganic NMR Flashcards

1
Q

What is a quadrupolar nuclei?

A

Nuclei with greater magnetic moments
They have lower symmetry than 1/2 spin nuclei
When these nuceli are placed in a magentic field their energies are split into multiple levels (number of levels given by: 2I+1)

Q

What are factors of rapid quadrupolar relaxation and what is it?

A

Wider NMR signals that I=1/2 nuceli. Line width increases because of:
* The quadruple moment of the nucleus
* The size of the molecule
* The symmetry of the molecule.

Q

What are characteristics of quadrupolar nuceli NMR?

A

Broad peaks - can lead to broad peaks for neighboring atoms
Smaller and more symmetrical molecules - sharper NMR signal
