Inorganic Ions Flashcards
1
Q
What are the six inorganic ions?
A
- Hydrogen ions
- Iron ions
- Sodium ions
- Phosphate ions
- Calcium ions
- Magnesium ions
2
Q
What do hydrogen ions do?
A
- lower pH of solutions and impact enzyme function and haemoglobin function
- role in chemiosmosis
3
Q
What do iron ions do?
A
- component of haemoglobin in transport of oxygen
- Fe2+ temporarily become Fe3+ when oxygen is bonded until released
4
Q
What do sodium ions do?
A
- involved in co transport of glucose and amino acids in absorption alongside sodium ions
- role in generating action potentials
5
Q
What do phosphate ions do?
A
- component of DNA (forms phosphodiester bonds with deoxyribose) and ATP (makes ADP more reactive)
- synthesis of ATP and production of phospholipids in DNA
6
Q
What does calcium ions do?
A
- involved in hardening/strengthening of bones and teeth
- synaptic transmission , connecting neurones
7
Q
What do magnesium ions do?
A
- component of chlorophyll required for photosynthesis
