Inorganic Ions Flashcards
1
Q
What is the function of hydrogen ions?
A
Act as a measure of pH level
( the higher the H+ concentration, the lower the pH level, the more acidic the solution is)
2
Q
What is the function of iron ions?
A
Found in each polypeptide chain of haemoglobin where it binds to O2.
3
Q
What is the function of sodium ions?
A
Involved in the co-transport of glucose and amino acids into ileum cells of the small intestine
4
Q
What is the function of phosphate ions?
A
Found in ATP where they act as a store for energy
Found in DNA and RNA where they allow phosphodiester bonds to from between nucleotides to form polynucleotides
