Inorganic Ions Flashcards
Name the 4 inorganic ions.
Phosphate (PO43-)
Hydrogen (H+)
Iron (Fe2+)
Sodium (Na+)
How is phosphate used as an inorganic ion?
Attached to other molecules as a phosphate group
. In DNA nucleotides
. In ATP
How is hydrogen used as an inorganic ion?
Maintains pH levels in the body
. Too many H+ ions - acidic
. Too little H+ ions - alkali
How is iron used as an inorganic ion?
Component of haemoglobin (red blood cells)
Transports oxygen around the body
How is sodium used as an inorganic ion?
Co transport of glucose and amino acids across cell membranes
Involved in nerve impulse and muscle contraction
Where are inorganic ions found?
In solution in the cytoplasm
Body fluids of organisms
Some in high concentrations and others in very low concentrations
