Bonding Flashcards
What is a molecule?
Two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds
Name the four fundamental elements in covalent bonding and the amount of bonds they have.
Carbon - 4 bonds
Nitrogen - 3 bonds
Oxygen - 2 bonds
Hydrogen - 1 bond
What are simple covalent molecules?
They contain only a few atoms held together by covalent bonds
Strong bonds WITH molecules
Weak bonds BETWEEN molecules
What is covalent bonding?
When atoms share one or more pairs of electrons (non-metals)
What is ionic bonding?
When atoms transfer electrons between a metal and a non metal
What is metallic bonding?
The chemical bonding that results from the attraction between metal atoms and the surrounding sea of electrons
What is an anion?
A negatively charged ion that has gained electrons
What is a cation?
A positively charged ion that has lost electrons
What is a hydrogen bond?
The weak attraction between a hydrogen atom with a partial positive charge and another atom with a partial negative charge
What is a polar molecule?
A molecule with an uneven distribution of charge
