Inorganic ions Flashcards
Inorganic ions
found in organisms where they occur in solution in the cytoplasm of cells and in body fluids
ion
a charged particle
Calcium ions
Ca 2+
* Calcium phosphate is and important structural component of teeth and bones
* Calcium ions are important in the transmission of nervous impulses + in the contraction of mucles
Sodium
Na +
* Involved in the transmission of nervous impulses
* used in the kidney to reabsorb water and produce concentrated urine
Potassium
K
* Involved in the nervous transmission
* Contribute to turgdity in guard cells which control stomata opening
Magnesium
Mg 2+
* Chlorophyll contains magnesium
* Some enzymes that catalyse the breakdown of ATO have these ions in their active site
Chloride
Cl
* used in the kidney to produced concentrated urine
* help to balance the positive charge of sodium and potassium ions in cells
Nitrate ions
Plants use the nitrogen in these ions to make proteins
Phosphate ions
- used for making nucleotides with calcium
- makes calcium phosphate that gives bones their strength
- used as a buffer in blood
- role in muscle contraction and nerve impulses
- component of many coenzymes
- role in transfer and storage in ATP
Hydrogen ions
H+
* chemical reactions in living organisms involves exchanges of H ions
* changes in acidity can affect both structural and chemical reactivity so cells must constantly maintain an acid-base balance
