Q

Iron ions

A
  1. Fe 2+ ions are part of haemoglobin + allows haemoglobin to carry its function
  2. Haemoglobin is a globular protein with a quaternary structure. It consists of 4 polypertide chains. Each of these chains has a central Fe 2+ ion
  3. The function of haemoglobin is to carry oxygen around the body in the red blood cells
  4. The Fe 2+ ion is what binds to oxygen
  5. When oxygen is bound the Fe 2+ ion temporarily becomes Fe 3+ ion. When oxygen is released, it becomes Fe2+ ion again

Q

Hydrogen ions

A
  1. CONC OF H+ IONS IN SOLUTION Determined pH
  2. pH is conc of H+ ions. Higher conc of H+ ions (in solution) means the environment is more acidic
  3. All enzyme controlled reactions are affected by pH

Q

Phosphate ions

A
  1. Phosphate ions are called phosphate groups when attached to another molecule
  2. ATP, DNA, RNA all have phosphate groups
  3. In ATP, the energy is stored within phosphate bonds between phosphate groups
  4. In DNA and RNA, the (CONDENSATION REACTIONS BETWEEN) phosphate groups allow the nucleotides to join together to form polynucleotides
