Inorganic Ions Flashcards
What is an ion?
Charged particle
What is a cation?
A positively charged particle
What is an anion?
Negatively charged particle
What are inorganic ions?
They don’t contain carbon
Describe haemoglobin
- large protein that carries O2 around the body in red blood cells
- made up of our different polypeptide cahins each with an iron ion (Fe2+) at the centre
- the iron ion attracts O2 and binds it to the haemoglobin
- at that point, Fe2+ becomes Fe3+ ion until the oxygen is released
Explain pH scale using H+
pH is calculated by the concentration of H+
the more H+ the greated the acidity
*NB more H+ = lower pH…
WHY?
Because pH represents the inverted powers/indices of the concentration
so pH 1 = 1/101 or 1/10 concentration
pH 2 = 1/102 or 1/100 concentration, etc.
Whad to sodium ions do?
They help transport glucose and amino acids across membranes
Sodiums work with glucose molecules to open up gates in the membrane, temporarily working together to open up the membrane so both can get in using a co-transporter
What is the function of phosphate ions?
They are essential components of DNA and RNA allowing nucleotides to bond as polynucleotides.
When a phosphate ion PO43+ is attached to another group, it’s called a phosphate group.
The bonds between phosphate groups store energy used in ATP/ADP reactions
