Inorganic Chemistry Flashcards
Chlorine with cold NaOH (alkali)
NaOCl + NaCl + H2O
Chlorine with hot NaOH (alkali)
3Cl2 + 6NaOH -> NaClO3 + 5NaCl + 3H2O
What is the test for halogens?
Dilute nitric acid and silver nitrate solution
Then ammonia solution to test for solubility
What result would you get for chlorine in halide test?
White ppt
AgCl dissolves in dilute ammonia
What result would you get for bromine in halide test?
Cream ppt
AgBr dissolves in conc ammonia
What result would you get from iodine in halide test?
Yellow ppt
AgI doesn’t dissolve in conc
What is the test for sodium halides and result?
Add sulphuric acid
NaCl = misty fumes
NaBr= brown fumes
NaI= purple fumes
What is the test for carbonate ions and result?
Add dilute HCl
see if gas produced is CO2 by limewater
What is the test for sulfate ions and result?
Add dilute HCl (to remove carbonate ion) then barium chloride solution
Produces white ppt of barium sulfate
What is the test for ammonium ions and result?
warm with aqueous NaOH
Gas produced will turn damp litmus paper from red to blue
Na flame test colour
orange
Li flame test colour
red
K flame test colour
purple
Rb flame test colour
red
Cs flame test colour
blue
