Q

cathedral vs Bazzaar

why are we talking about cathedral and bazzar ?

A

cathedral:
- must enter through the main doors
- there is an hierarchy physically
- since one person is at the front , elevated on this platform
- while the others are at a lower lvl

bazzar :

  • everyone is equal in terms of their power
  • for their booth location, its first come, first serve
  • but for something like the farmers market, you can choose where your booth will be set up
  • you can come into the market from any area

relates how the internet was formed from both perspective.
so, if you are setting up internet at home , you are kinda choosing and you are in that power role.

but if you are using internet at the public library for example, there are many players, so its kinda like a bazaar at that point.

so, its a mixture of the two, its a hybrid

Q

pure meshwork

A

equal lvl in terms of their power
everyone has the same opportunity to advance themselves
- for example,
if the prof gives everyone a assignment
you can choose how to collaborate
this is a pure meshwork except for the prof

  • another example, is a project started by students

Q

Mozilla project

A

talking about the web
at the beginning the web was good
a place for innovation and opportunities
a public resource
ppl face new problems , there are viruses , pop ups as the web grow
the web became scary to use and complicated and slow
mozilla project : new kind of web browser
known as firefox ,
anyone can use it , it is none profit
anyone can use it to build their ideas
now anyone can build anything they can imagine
they stand up for users

which construct is firefox a part of ?

mozilla are hierarchy + meshwork
- certain ppl who are full time in mozilla to develop the product
paid through donations
ppl in the organization work really hard to involve ppl in the community

mozilla gets the best coders and they get paid very well
so google chrome is another example of this, who uses this strategy

google chrome is open source to some degree
they allow the community to get involved.

Q

WHAT IS THE SHAPE OF THE INTERNET?

A

a web,

a web implies a meshwork

we have corporation involve in structuring the pipelines
pipeliens = fiber backbone
so, its the backbone
what he means by “backbone” is that
connect ryerosn university, to U of T , to bay street to east coast.

another example : diagram of africa

Q

Fractal,

A

Fractal, a point of recursions, a point of where it repeats itself

for example the tree, the trunk split itself into branches which then split into several branches, those branches, branch again , you have twigs and then becomes a leaves
a leave have many veins that branch in the same way

wherever you zoom in or zoom out from a tree
it looks relatively the same

this is the same thing with the internet

Q

video, patterns

A

the pattern repeat themselves
taking x and y coordination and you are interating for incursions.

black = formula went to 0
white =formula went to infinity
in between, in the gray area we map it to different colors, just to see how long it takes to go back to 0 or 1

youll see the original shape that we started off with

Q

layers of abstraction

A

Moving from one fractal level to another. For example:

LOCAL NETWORK (HOME)

your router, central point , has devices connected to it.
(like the stem that branches comes out of it)

ISP NETWORK (TEKSAVVY, BELL, ROGERS)
- all connected together too

COUNTRY (CHINA, CANADA, USA)

INTERNET (global network)

we zoom out from the home network, from the ISP network , to country network and then internet

if you zoom out more, what do we have ?
interplanetary network
we are starting to develop a network on our solar system

only the _____ survive

A

adaptable
in medival times, they wield their swords with their right hand
so they changed the direction of the stairwell, like that was someone invade the castle and goes up the stairwell, the one going up wouldnt really be able to use their swords since they will hit the wall
the one going down has the advantage

Q

TED:

crowd, light ,desire

A

crowd: a group of ppl who share
a common interest
Need enough ppl
ex: craig list –> if there is no one on there , there is no value

Facebook
if only have a few ppl on fb , it will have no value.

light : clear, open visibility
what they are capable of , show your stuff to the world
keep posting .

desire : innovation is hard work, need desire.
without it won’t happen
thats why there are using the platform

ppl taught themselves how to dance or breakdance through youtube

ppl in kenya , have a garbage dump in the community
started learning agriculture skills due to internet
not relying on anyone else for info and food
self sufficient
wont happen if the internet didn’t connect them

Q

Incremental vs disruptive

A

incremental : you take something and you add a new feature to it
ex: apple is doing this successfully , copying from others and they pretty much polish it up, make it better
disruptive: changes society , looks at what came before it
high degree of change that the replication are long lasting

Educated workforce : do we have designers, engineers , programmers or bringing ppl in
low cost of living : rent and property cost, also taxes , and access to a place to work and live. transportation too
