Innate vs Adaptive Immunity Flashcards
1
Q
What are the steps/events of an immune response?
A
- pathogen recognition
- activation
- response (effector function)
- decline in immune response
2
Q
What are characteristics of the innate immune system?
A
- rapid response
- fixed number of receptors
- limited specificities
- constant activation during response (no improvement)
- can be amplified by adaptive response
3
Q
What are characteristics of the adaptive/acquired immune response?
A
- slow response
- variable
- many specificities
- improves during response
- co-dependent (requires innate for activation)
- cooperative
4
Q
How does innate recognition occur?
A
- PAMPs (pathogen associated molecular patterns)
2. PRRs (pathogen recognition receptors) - have a fixed number, they recognize the PAMPs
5
Q
How does adaptive recognition occur?
A
Via variable receptors and specificity. Antigens (Ags) are the targets of recognition. The receptors are either antibodies or T cell receptors
6
Q
What are the types of antigen-specific receptors?
A
- antibodies
2. T cell receptors
