Inmate Immune Response Flashcards
1
Q
Inflammatory Response
A
- damage to tissue invasion by pathogens
- The entry of pathogens triggers the release of chemokines from surrounding tissue.
- The chemokines act on basophils and mast cells (types of leucocytes), causing them to release the chemical histamine prostaglandins are also released.
- Histamine and prostaglandins redirect blood flow to the site of injury, bringing heat, fluid, and phagocytes, which destroy the pathogens.

Q
The Role of the Complement System
A
The complement system plays a critical role in inflammation and defence against some bacterial infections. Complement may also be activated during reactions against incompatible blood transfusions, and during the damaging immune responses that accompany autoimmune disease.
