Inlays/ Onlays Flashcards
what is an inlay
an indirect restoration fitted to a cavity or a tooth and cemented into place
what is an onlay
an indirect restoration similar to inlays but incorporates replacement of missing cusps
what are dental ceramics
brittle materials which are glass or cystalline based with fillers
what are resin composites
resin based matrix with dimethacrylate monomers, filler particles, coupling agents and photo-initiator
what is a ceromeric
type of resin composite for indirect use with high filler load of ceramic particles
when are inlays and onlays indicated
root filled posterior teeth where cuspal protection is required
posterior teeth with missing cusps
conservation of tooth structure compared to crowns
what are contraindications of inlays/ onlays
deep subgingival preparation
poor moisture control
patients with poor plaque control or active caries
what tooth preparation is required for inlays and onlays
shoulder and butt joints
rounded internal line and point angles
no undercuts
minimal taper on axial walls
smooth CSMA
what is the cavity preparation for an onlay
occlusal reduction of 1.5mm
axial reduction of 1mm
taper walls 6 degrees
rounded line angles
smooth 90 degree CSMA
what is used to take an impression of an onlay cavity preparation
rigid stock tray
polyester or PVS impression material
what can be used to check occlusion of onlays after fit
millers forceps and 40 micron articulating paper
