Injury Terms Flashcards
Acute
Occurs suddenly
ex. falling, sprained ankle
Chronic
Develop gradually over time
ex. overuse, consistent exposure to chemicals
Fracture
Break/crack in bone
Can be partial or complete
Spasm
involuntary contraction of a muscle or group of muscles
Hernia
bulge or lump that occurs when an organ or tissue pushes through a weak area in the muscle or tissue wall of the body
Subluxation
an incomplete or partial dislocation of a joint or organ
Dislocation
disturbance from a proper, original, or usual place or state; forced out of normal position
Cyanosis
a bluish or purple discoloration of the skin, lips, or nail beds caused by a lack of oxygen in the blood
Erythema
redness or discoloration of the skin or mucous membranes. It’s caused by increased blood flow, or hyperemia, in the capillaries near the skin’s surface; sunburn, friction, etc.
Exotosis
a benign (noncancerous) bone tumor. It’s a bump of bone tissue that grows out of one of your bones.
Crepitus
a crackling, crunching, or grating sound or sensation that occurs when bones, cartilage, or fractured bone fragments rub together
Laceration
a cut or tear in the skin and underlying tissues; usually irregular or jagged, but can sometimes be smooth
Abrasion
a scrape on your skin. This is a break in your skin that happens when your skin rubs off; the process of scraping or wearing something away.
Contusion
a region of injured tissue or skin in which blood capillaries have been ruptured; a bruise; discoloration
Concussion
a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that occurs when the brain is shaken or moves rapidly within the skull; affects brain function
Contre Coup
a contusion resulting from the brain contacting the skull on the side opposite from where impact occurs.
Puncture
a cut made by a sharp object, like a nail, knife, or teeth, that enters the skin and tissue; can include human or animal bites
Incision
a surgical cut made in skin or flesh; an opening
Ecchymosis
a discoloration of the skin resulting from bleeding underneath, typically caused by bruising.
Pitted Edema
swelling caused by a buildup of fluid under the skin, which leaves a dent or pit when the area is pressed on
Edema
swelling caused by too much fluid trapped in the body’s tissues
Secondary Hypoxic Injury
Additional tissue damage that occurs after an initial injury; typically results from inadequate oxygen (hypoxia) to the affected area
Range of Movement (ROM)
the distance and direction a joint can move, from full extension to full flexion
Sprain
injury to a ligament; stretching/tearing
