Acute injury
Sudden injury associated with a traumatic event
Chronic injury
Slowly developed injury associated with repetitive movement and over use
Concussion
Traumatic brain injury resulting in a disturbance of brain function such as dizziness, confusion or temporary unconscious
Dislocation
Displacement of a bone from its original position
Exercise induced muscle damage
Pain and stiffness felt in the muscles which peaks 24-72 hours after exercise
Fracture
Partial or complete break in a bone due to an excessive force
Hard tissue injury
Give examples
Damage to bone, joint or cartilage
Shin Splints, stress fracture
Shin splints
Chronic shin pain due to inflammation of muscles and stress on tendon attachments
Soft tissue injury
Give examples
Damage to connective tissue (skin, muscle, tendon, ligament)
Sprain or strain
Sprain
Overstretch or a tear in the ligament which connects bone to bone
Strain
Overstretch or a tesr to a muscle or tendon which connects muscle to bone
Simple fracture
A fracture which does not break the skin. Also known as a closed fracture
Tendinosis
A chronic overuse or repetitive strain injury characterised by the deterioration of a tendon
Tennis elbow
A chronic overuse and repetitive strain injury associated with racket sports and characterised by tendon pain in the forearm
Anti-inflammatory drugs
Medication taken to reduce inflammation, temperature and pain; often following injury
