Injuries Flashcards
What is a stress fracture?
What is it caused by?
How is it treated?
Overuse injury caused by repetitive stress of the foot hitting the ground.
Muscle becomes fatigue and unable to absorb added shock. Eventually stress transfers to bone which cracks.
Usually heal themselves with rest.
What is tendinosis?
What is it caused by?
How is it treated?
Swelling and pain at a joint. Repetitive strain over time causes the breakdown of collagen, growth of blood vessels and thickening of the tendons sheath.
Treated with physiopherapy and eccentric contractions.
What is shin splints?
What is it caused by?
How is it treated?
Pain in shins induced by exercises. Caused by running or repeated weight bearing or sudden changes in activity intensity or bad shoes.
Treated with ice, rest or orthotics.
What is a chronic injury?
Injury that develops over time and is persistent or long lasting.
What is an acute injury?
Sudden injury caused by an indirect or direct contact.
What is a Compound/Open Fracture?
When the bone breaks through the skin.
What is a Simple/closed fracture?
When the bone does not breach the surface of the skin.
What is a complete fracture?
When the bone snaps into two or more pieces- complete.
What is an incomplete fracture?
Bone cracks but does not break the whole way.
What is a fracture?
What is it caused by?
How is it treated?
Bone breakage.
Caused by direct or indirect impact.
Treatment depends on severity and location (if nearby tissue is damaged)
What is a sprain?
What is it caused by?
How is it treated?
Damage (overstretch or tear) to ligaments which connect bone to bone. Caused by a sudden twist or an impact that forces the joint beyond its extreme range of motion.
What is a contusion?
What is it caused by?
How is it treated?
Bruise. Area of skin or tissue in which blood vessels have ruptured.
Caused by a direct fall or impact.
Most contusions heal rapidly. Severe ones cause deep tissue damage preventing participation for months.
What is a haemotoma?
What is it caused by?
How is it treated?
Bleeding from ruptured blood vessels confined in the tissue. Small bruises to deep bleeds.
Damaged tissue.
Ice/medical aids to reduce swelling
What is an abrasion?
What is it caused by?
How is it treated?
Superficial damage to the skin caused by friction between skin and surface.
Caused by scraping against a surface.
If laceration is caused medical attention needed and may require cleaning.
What is a blister?
What is it caused by?
How is it treated?
Separation of layers of skin where a pocket of fluid forms.
Caused by friction.
Using correct equipment, footwear and doing correct training load.
