Injuries Flashcards
Definition of drowning
Respiratory impairment from fluid
Definition of near drowning
Acute asphyxiation of lungs but laryngospasm protects from water
Secondary drowning
Effects of drowning much after the incedent, eg pulmonary oedema
Define shock
Inadequate perfusion of body’s vitals with oxygenated blood
Types of shock (6)
Cardiogenic (heart cannot pump, eg infarction) Anaphylactic Obstructive (eg embolism) Septic Neurogenic Hypovolemic
Stages of hypovolemic shock
Compensated, decompensated, irreversible
Compensated shock
15% of blood lost
Hyperventilation and increased HR, but no change in BP
Decompensated shcon
30% blood lost
Tachycardia
Anaerobic respiration
Signs and symptoms of hypovolemic shock
Confusion Hypotension Cold clammy skin Rapid breathing Rapid weak pulse Nausea
Signs and symptoms of blunt trauma
Distension
Bruising
Lacerations
Guarding, rigidity
Flail chest
2 or more adjacent ribs are fractured in two or more places.
Results in paradoxical movement
Simple pneumothorax
Air trapped in pleural space due to internal rupture of lung
Causes of simple pneumothorax
Direct injury, barotrauma
Open pneumothorax
Atmosphere connected to pleural space. Lung collapses.
Signs and symptoms of open pneumothorax (3)
Sucking sound
Accessory muscles
Shortness of Heath
