Where is it and how long for?
RAF Cranwell and 24 weeks
Weeks 1-6
Military induction module
- covers basic military skills
- foot drill
- weapon training
- field craft
- CBRN equipment
- RAF core values (RISE)
weeks 7-12
Development 1
- Relational-individual-collaborative
- leadership principles
- develop physical and mental resilience
- trip to Robson resilience academy centre at Crickhowell for leadership
- culminates with a week long exercise to practice leadership principles
- learn about air and space power with Portsmouth business school
Weeks 13-18
Development 2
- explore leadership
- focus on command and control (C2) offsite at the air and space warfare centre
- simulated command and control exercise
- command and control in the air and space environment
- line management responsibilities
- care and welfare in leadership

Weeks 19-24
Consolidation
- 4 week air command and control based exercise
- deployment to the Robson Resilience Centre at Grantown on Spey
- management simulated exercise
- academic assessment in Air & and Space Power and General Service Knowledge for officers
- graduation
EFT
Elementary flying training
fly the tutor or the prefect aircraft
16 weeks + ground school 6 weeks
FTU
Formal training unit
Hollowman air force base New mexico, USA
fly the Reaper or protector, learning to employ weapons
24 weeks
Specialist training/ phase 2
- 1 week course at RAF Henlow
- complete a course on aircraft and mission systems as well as aviation related subjects to prepare you for basic flying training
- 9 months of live flying training on the Avenger and simulators to learn to use sensors
- then join OCU (operational conversion unit) on aircraft I’ve been assigned to
Career prospects
commission for 12 years
promotion to flight lieutenant after 2 1/2 years
further promotion is by competitive selection
