Police responsibilities at an incident relating to ‘FREEZE, CONTROL, PRESERVE’
FREEZE
- Keep the scene in it’s original state
- Nothings to be touched or moved
CONTROL
- Control all activities around the scene (entering and exiting)
PRESERVE
- All relevant exhibits/evidence
Responsibilities of a scene guard using the UNBENT acronym
U - unauthorised entry to people without permission from O/C
N - notebook recording of details of anyone entering and exiting the scene
B - brief authorised people
E - explore and report suspicious activity
N - not contaminating the scene yourself
T - think of the animals
Information to consider when en-route to a scene
OBTAIN
- Description of suspect
- Description of suspects vehicle (if any)
- Suspects direction of travel
- Description of weapons (if carrying any)
WATCH
- Any vehicle entering and exiting the scene
- Vehicles registration number
PLAN
- Find a Safe Forward Point (SFP) to park vehicle in order to carry out further operations safely
FORM
- Plan for your initial actions when arriving
- Discuss areas of responsibilities at the scene with your partner
Information to obtain from an informant on arrival at the scene
Ask the informant for…
- Victim/offenders identification
- Offenders direction of travel
- Description of vehicle and rego number if vehicle was used
- Location of scene
