What does CAP stand for?
Common Approach Path
A CAP is for?
All movements into and out of the scene
Using a path which avoids possible routes taken to and from the scene by a suspect(s) or the victim
Once at the scene there are three basic principles to consider, what are they?
- Freeze
- Control
- Preserve
In the basic principles, Freeze means?
- Keep the scene in its original state
* Nothing is to be touched or moved
In the basic principles, Control means?
- All movement to and from the scene
* All activity in the contained area
In the basic principles, Preserve means?
All relevant exhibits
When setting boundaries, what should you consider?
- think BIG
* remember to include the area in which the offender approached; entered and left the scene; including vehicles
The order of priorities when arriving at a scene:
- Park in a safe clear area
- Advise comms of arrival, obtain acknowledgment
- If the scene is different, revise your plan
- Be aware of what is happening; where it is happening; who is involved
- Ask people nearby what is happening; where it is happening; who is involved
- Provide an update to Comms
What three principal objectives does a scene guard have?
- Freezing
- Controlling
- Preserving
What acronym can be used to remember the scene guards tasks?
UNBENT U - Unauthorised Entry N - Notebook Recording B - Brief authorised people E - Explore and report suspicious activity N - No contaminating it yourself T - Think of the animals
Important information when en-route to the scene:
• Description of the
- Suspect
- Suspects Vehicle
- Direction of Travel
- Weapons carried
- Watch and note vehicle registrations that may have come from the scene
- Plan where you will park your vehicle - designate this as the SFP
- Form a plan for your initial actions upon arrival
When forming a plan for your initial actions on arrival, what should be discussed?
- Discuss areas of responsibility at the scene with partners
* Decide who will deal with possible suspects and who will deal with possible victims
What is SFP, and what does it mean?
Safe Forward Point
Meaning; a safe location near an incident from which the forward operations can be supported.
The first priority will always be to ensure the safety of?
The attending police members
When obtaining information, you must ask the informant/witness to?
- Identify the victim and/or the offender
* If the offender is not present, their direction of travel and description of vehicle
If there are signs of life; or the slightest possibility a person is still alive, what do we do?
Render first aid immediately

What do you need to ensure when removing people from the scene?
• that they do not take anything or contaminate the scene
• if possible, have a police member
- contain them in a clear area
- warn them not to discuss what has happened
- obtain their full particulars
- keep warring factions, families or gang members apart
