INITIAL ACTION Flashcards
Outline initial action
Four step process for first attending CIB member
- gain information
- ensuring initial actions are attended to
- conducting a reconnaissance
- carrying out an appreciation and taking any immediate action
Discuss the process of gaining information and provide some examples of post event history
Gaining information is obtained through briefing present police and outlining
.What actions have been taken?
.What actions are currently being undertaken?
.What actions they feel are still required?
Some examples of post event history are
.Staff moving through a house to a assist a victim
.A body being moved to ascertain signs of life
.The scuffle with an offender while making an arrest
. uplifting of an exhibit to ensure its preservation
.The attendance of other emergency services
Discuss making an appreciation.
This consists of considering all the factors you have identified from
.The information you gained from the attending staff for witnesses
.The reconnaissance you have completed
.Any other relevant considerations you Deem important
relevant considerations may include but are not limited to;
.Weather
.Time of day
. The likely time until the formal examination can be complete
.The likelihood of persons returning to the same
.The likelihood of persons attempting to interfere with the scene
legal aspects i.e. how the scene is being held-
After considering factors you can identify the relevant course is open to you and consider the advantages and disadvantages of each course of action. This becomes the basis for any immediate action you take.
Provide some examples of any immediate action you may take
.You may determine that the same boundaries are too wide so you need some closer.
.The scene guards may have been placed in the wrong place so you move them.
.A particular exhibit may need to be uplifted immediately due to a change in weather conditions.
Give some examples of immediate action taken after the completion of your appreciation.
Ensure the following;
-the scene has been cleared of people
– Witnesses and any suspects are taken to the station to be interviewed
– The scene boundaries are correct. It is better that they may be too wide than be too narrow.
– The scene guards have been or are briefed and placed correctly and remain at the same until the tasks are completed
–Any police at the scene are briefed on any further duties required
– A register or scene log has been established to log all entries in and out of scene
– A common approach path and and out of the scene has been done to avoid contamination of evidence
– All exhibits are preserved or secured
– The scene has been preserved and secured for the formal scene examination
