Inheritance, Selection & Speciation Flashcards
Define allele
One alternative form of a given allelic pair
Define dominant allele
Expresses when homozygous and heterozygous at the expense of the recessive allele
Define recessive allele
Only expresses when homozygous
Define genotype
The specific allelic combination for a certain gene
Define phenotype
The outward expression of a particular trait
Define Codominance
Two equally dominant alleles which both contribute to the phenotype
Define sex-linked genes
Carried on the X chromosome, making it more common in men than womengene
Define multiple alleles
More then two versions of the gene
Name the two types of genetic diagrams
- Punnet squares
- FOIL method
Give three reasons why interbreeding between species may not occur
- Different courtship behaviours
- Different breeding season
- Egg and sperm are no longer compatible so they cannot fuse
Define directional selection
Favours individuals which vary in one direction from the mean eg/ longer fur
Define stabilising selection
Favours average individuals (due to unchanging conditions)
Why does every species over produce offspring?
- Those with the most advantageous alleles will survive
- The others will die
- Advantages vary in different habitats
