Inheritance and Evolution Flashcards
What is the difference between a gene and a chromosome?
Genes are made up of DNA and contain chromeosomes
How would you describe the structure of DNA and where is it found?
The structure of DNA is called a Double Helix and it is found in the nucleus of a cell.
How many chromosomes do humans have in a normal body cell?
46 chromeosomes (23 pairs)
What is a zygote?
.
Define phenotype and genotype.
A genotype refers to the genetic characteristics of an organism. A phenotype refers to the physical characteristics.
Give an example of how genetic modification can be beneficial.
It can be beneficial for growing crops and reducing the price of food
Give two reasons why some people may be against genetic modification.
It can have effects on the animals and humans if it is not done properly
What is an allele?
/
What is an ecosystem? Give examples.
A ecosystem is a group/community of all living organisms
What is biodiversity? Why is it important to maintain biodiversity on earth?
The total variety of all living things (Life on earth). biodiverity helps ecosystems to produce water and clean air.
What is Darwin’s theory of evolution?
Darwin’s theory was that the fittest of the species would survive and adapt to there surroundings
Name three ways we can conserve endangered species.
Gene banks,captive breeding and conservation
