Q

Which two alleles are used to represent biological sex?

A

X and Y

17
Q

Is XX male or female?

A

Female

18
Q

Is XY male or female?

A

Male

19
Q

Which 3 alleles code for different blood groups?

A

A, B and O

20
Q

Which blood group allele is recessive?

A

O

21
Q

What does it mean if genes are codominant?

A

Two dominant genes are expressed simultaneously. E.g. in blood groups, A and B can both be expressed (Blood type AB)

22
Q

Alleles for sex-linked disorders are usually located on which chromosome?

A

X

23
Q

Why are males more likely to suffer from a sex-linked disorder?

A

Sex-linked disorders are caused by recessive alleles on the X chromosome. Females have two X chromosomes so would need to inherit the allele from both parents. Males only have 1 chromosome so inherit the allele from their mother.

24
Q

What causes genetic variation?

A

mutations and random sorting of chromosomes during meiosis and sexual reproduction

25
Q

What is a mutation?

A

A change in DNA sequence

26
Q

What causes environmental variation?

A

Differences in environment

27
Q

Are all mutations negative?

A

No. Some can be beneficial (e.g. antibiotic resistance in bacteria), some will have no effect and some will cause a change which is neither positive or negative (e.g. different eye colours)
