Inheritance Flashcards
Define discontinuous variation (give three examples)
When there is a distinct number of options with no in betweens
Ear lobes
Hitchhikers thumb
Ability to roll tongue
Define continuous variation (give three examples)
There are plenty of measurements from one extreme to the other
Height
Hair colour
Heart rate
Give an example of where the genetics and environment affect the physical appearance of someone
Skin colour: a person born really pale will burn easily in the sun, whereas someone who was born with a darker complexion due to their genetics won’t burn as easily in the sun instead they will tan which is an affect of the environment
What is the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction. Give an example of each
Sexual reproduction requires two parents (humans) whereas asexual reproduction only requires the mother (aphids)
What is the effect of sexual reproduction on variation?
The offspring from sexual reproduction have a mixture of their parents genes making them similar but not identical to their parents and siblings.
What is the effect of asexual reproduction on variation?
There is no variation in asexual reproduction the offspring are identical clones of their mother.
Link DNA, chromosomes and genes
You get 46 chromosomes from your parents in sexual reproduction 23 from your mum and 23 from your dad. Chromosomes are made up of DNA, sections of DNA are genes that code for particular traits in a living organism such as your hair colour.
How many chromosomes do humans have? Where do they come from
A human has 46 chromosomes 23 from mum and 23 from dad
What determines the sex of a human?
The sex chromosomes 1 from your mum and 1 from your dad determine your sex. Males are XY and females are XX
