Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What do word equations tell you about a chemical reaction?
Reactant+reactant=product(s)
It tells you what is going together and what will be formed afterwards
How do we know a chemical reaction is occurring
A change in colour, smell, heat and/or you can’t change it back
What does conservation of mass mean? How does it apply to a chemical reaction
In a chemical reaction the total mass of the reactants will always equal the total mass of the products
What can account for increased or decreased amount of mass in the products compared to the reactants?
If not all gasses produced were caught and weighed with the mass
How is potential energy related to a chemical reaction?
When an atom has an outer shell that is not full it has potential energy that it will use to carry out the reaction
Why is energy released during a chemical reaction?
Energy is released in a reaction so that the atoms can receive or give an electron
What are the three particles that make up an atom
Electrons, protons and neutrons
How are the particles arranged
Electrons on the outside (negatives)
Protons (positive) and Neutrons (neutral) in the Nucleus
How do you know how many of each particle there are in an atom
The Atomic number is the number of protons an electrons
The mass number - the atomic number is the number of neutrons
What type of bond can form between two non metal atoms
Ionic bonding
One atom loses an electron and the other one gains it
What type of bond can form between a metal and a non metal atoms
Covalent bond
Where the electron is shared between the atoms
Why do atoms form bonds?
To become stable
