Inheritance Flashcards
What are genes
Sections of chromosomes they are made up of DNA and code for specific characteristics.
What are alleles?
Different version of the same gene
What are chromosomes
Long length of DNA coiled up into stick like structures. We have 23 pairs and 46 in total.
What is the definition of species?
A group of organisms that are similar and can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
What are Gametes
Sex cells - only cells with 23 chromosomes
What is a phenotype
The characteristic expressed is the phenotype
What is a gentotype
The allele pair for each characteristic
What does homozygous mean
Both alleles are either dominant or receive.
What does heterozygous mean
One dominant allele and one recessive allele.
What is homozygous recessive
ss
What is homozygous dominant
SS
What is the symbol of the faulty allele for sickle cell anaemia
SS - unaffected
Ss - carrier
ss - affected
Name 2 genetic diseases
Sickle cell anaemia
Cystic fibrosis
What is the symbol of the faulty allele for cystic fibrosis
FF - unaffected
Ff - carrier
ff - affected
Name 5 symptoms of cystic fibrosis
Persistent coughing Excess production of saliva Excess production of thick sticky mucus Wheezing Shortness of breath doing ordinary things Problem digesting food because enzymes aren't released Fats aren't digested properly Clubbed fingers
