inheritance Flashcards
alleles=
variations of the same gene(one from mum one from dad)
dominant allele=
only needs to be inherited from one parent in order for the characteristic to show up as a phenotype
recessive allele=
needs to be inherited from both parents in order for the characteristic to show up as a phenotype
homozygous dominant=
two copies of a dominant allele
homozygous recessive=
two copies of a recessive allele
heterozygous=
two alleles of a gene are different
genotype=
the combination of alleles that control each characteristics
phenotype=
the observable characteristics of an organism e.g eye colour
codominance=
when more than one allele is expressed in the phenotype at the same time
Explain what is mean by the term dominant allele [2 marks]
An allele is a form of a gene. A dominant allele only requires it to present for the phenotype to be expressed
What is a mutation? [2 marks]
A random[1 mark] change[1 mark] in the allele[1 mark]
