Inheritance Flashcards
What is an allele
A version of a gene that codes for a specific protein
Definition of dominant allele
Only needs one allele to be expressed
Definition of a recessive allele
Needs two alleles to be expressed
Definition of heterozygous
Each contain the one of each allele for example “Tt”
Definition of homozygous
Both chromosomes have the same allele for example “tt” or “TT”
Definition of a phenotype
An individual’s physical characteristics
Definition of genotype
the combination of alleles (forms of the gene) that a person has for a particular trait
What is meant by the term “co-dominant”
2 dominant alleles expressed equally so 50:50
What is a mutation
A change in the sequence of bases in DNA
How to answer question about natural selection
Mutations increase variation in population of…
… are more likely to survive due to mutation
This allows them to reproduce and pass their alleles to their offspring
This mutation then becomes more common in the population
How do bacteria develop a resistance to antibodies
Variation in bacteria due to mutation which causes some to develop a resistance to antibiotics,
Bacteria produced by division of resistant bacteria will also have the resistance
If antibiotics are taken, non-resistant bacteria are killed and resistant bacteria population increases due to lack of competition
Antibiotics resistance becomes more common in population
