Inheritance Flashcards
Recessive
Term used to describe an allele that requires two copies to be expressed
Dominant
Term used to describe an allele that requires one copy to be expressed
Heterozygous
having two different alleles for a trait in a genotype
Homozygous
Having two identical alleles in a genotype
Genotype
The combination of alleles an individual has
Phenotype
The trait expressed by an individualās alleles
Agglutination
clumping of red blood cells
Sex linked
Refers to traits that are found on the sex chromosomes only
X-linked
Trait that is found on the X chromosome only
Continuous
Describes traits that can exist in a range (height, weight, skin colour, etc.);
produces a normal curve distribution
Discontinuous
Describes traits that exist in categories (blood type, sex, etc); usually determined by a single gene
State that genetics affect an organismās characteristics
The genes the organism gets from itās parent or parents
State that environment affects an organismās characteristics
The conditions an organism is exposed to as it grows
What are monozygotic twins?
Identical twins.
One fertilised egg (ovum) splits and develops into two babies that have exactly the same genetic information
What are dizygotic twins?
Fraternal twins.
Two separate eggs (ova) are fertilised by two sperm and produce two genetically unique children.
