Inhalation Therapy Flashcards
Nebulisers
-for inhalation of drugs in a more simpler way
-used also if drugs cannot be administered in other ways
-it converts solution into aerosol particles that are suspended in a gas stream
-duration=10-15 mins
- volume of drug delivered= 4ml
-drugs like mucolytics, bronchodilators, corticosteroids and antibiotics can be administered
Types of nebulisers
-Jet nebulisers
-Ultrasonic nebulisers
Jet nebulisers
-oxygen is forced through a narrow pipe in the middle of the nebuliser
-the negative pressure draws drug solution up the feed tube from the liquid container
-the jet of gas fragments turns liquid into droplets that leave the nebuliser in a stream of gas
-driving gas flow= 5-6 l/min
-meds are delivered using oxygen flow meter or a compressor (portable)
Ultrasonic nebulisers
-aerosol created by high frequency sound waves
-electric current is applied to piezo-electrical crystal at the base of machine that causes ultrasonic vibrations
-frequency of oscillation of crystals influence the particle size of gas from liquid
-produces higher gas output than jet nebulisers
Domiciliary nebulisers
- nebulisers that the pt is required to use at home
-must be washed and dried thoroughly after each use to prevent bacterial growth
-should be serviced as per the manufacturer
-if travelling overseas, an nternational adaptor should be purchased
